Don Abernathy - The Integrated FilmmakerWhat is an Integrated Filmmaker?I, Don Abernathy, believe that today's filmmaker must be trained, educated, and experienced in a variety of disciplines that are associated with the film-making process and constantly explore, expand and stay tuned in to the never ending evolution of the high tech digital and Internet world we now live in.The speed at which change happens as a result of this fast-paced digital and Internet world affects every aspect of what goes on in film-making and the motion picture industry for both Independent and Industry Standard filmmakers.The old notion of being a "Director" the way it was conceived and practiced in the early days and or "Golden Days" of Hollywood no longer applies.Today's filmmaker, especially Independent Filmmakers must be "Integrated" into the reality of this fast-paced digital and Internet world. That means being pro-active in understanding, educating, and staying involved in the stream of rapid changes that are constantly on-going, as well as become familiar, adaptable, or at least appreciative to the related skills involved in the film-making process, including Grip, Production Management and / or Line Producing, Camera Operations, Cinematography, Editing, Marketing and Promotions.Integrated is the new Independent / Dependent Filmmaker by my definition. Integrated is not necessarily a Master of all things film-making, but is rather a Master at connecting the dots of how each of these related skills flow into making the work process necessary to work and be applicable to the modern digital and Internet world.With in the Primary Goal of becoming a completely "Integrated" filmmaker, Don Abernathy has chosen to tackle a series of training, education, and practical experience in order to further appreciate and understand what it is to be a modern day Independent Filmmaker.Among dozens of student films, feature films for Video/DVD and television release, Don Abernathy had the honor of working a Post Production position on James Cameron's "Avatar", 2009,) via IMAX, and recently as a Grip second Unit)on the feature film "Silver Case", 2011, staring Eric Roberts, Seymour Cassel, and Shalim Ortiz.Over the last decade, Abernathy has worked in over 100 feature films, commercials, music videos, and television shows as either an Actor, Writer, Director, Assistant Director, Camera Operator, Producer, Associate Producer, Production Crew, Grip, Production Manager, and even Background Artist, all in the spirit of learning and growing; becoming a true Integrated Independent Filmmaker.
