Big Miracle has a Big Heart
Inspired by the true story that captured the hearts of people across the world, the rescue adventure Big Miracle tells the amazing tale of a small town news reporter and an animal-loving volunteer who are joined by rival world superpowers to save a family of majestic gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle. -- (C) Universal Yes, the trailer may be overly-sappy and eye-rolling, and the film may seem to push animal rights to the extreme, but you know what? I enjoyed BIG MIRACLE a lot more than I expected, and I had not been this emotionally engaged in a film in a couple of weeks. Fortunately, BIG MIRACLE doesn't take a political stance as the trailer might suggest. It merely tells the story of the true event that took place in Alaska in 1988. I wasn't born at that time, so I didn't know what to expect while watching the film, but I was very interested to see how the event unfolded like it did back then when it happened. There are characters that range from the environmental activist to those who don't care anything about the environment, and the film has a lot of fun poking fun at both sides of the spectrum. It's also not afraid to show that those who want to help save the whales just do so because "it's the right thing to do." Many of the characters do it for their political gain, to get up the ladder, to make money, to fix their reputation, to gain respect, etc. which I thought was really interesting. However, what these characters do have in common is that they all love whales. I mean, come on. Who doesn't love whales?! I also found it refreshing that the native Inupiat people are in the film. They are shown nowhere in the trailer, but they play a major part in the film from the opening to the closing shot. The cast is vast, but the main actors are John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore. They both do a great job in their roles, and I especially love Barrymore lighting up the screen with her presence. Ted Danson is pretty hilarious as the enemy of Barrymore's character who both reluctantly have to work together to save the whales. Other notable actors in the ensemble cast include Vinessa Shaw, Kristen Bell, and Dermot Mulroney, although everyone is good. Other notable things in the film are the incredible production values. The whales look very convincing and realistic, but I have to admit I'd be gullible enough to believe real whales were used in the film. However, a quick look-up of the film's production can address this question, but I'm too lazy to do that now. The sweeping shots of Alaska are gorgeous as well. Finally, I'd like to mention the terrific pacing because the film could have easily been boring and uninteresting after the setup of the trapped whales, but it manages to be interesting through the very end. Overall, BIG MIRACLE is a really good film, and it's exactly what you expect it to be, although I'd be hard-pressed to see if it didn't win the heart of every viewer who sees it. With its moments of sentimentality, it's also surprisingly hilarious as well. I really recommend the film to those who are interested in seeing it.
